Several species

  • many species feed on crops
  • highly variable in size and color
  • long straight wings lay tent-like over the back
  • most grasshoppers overwinter in the egg stage
  • nymphs common early in the year
  • may be attracted to gardens during dry weather
  • nymphs have short wing pads
